The infrared Raspberry Pi Camera Module 2 NoIR was introduced in April 2016, replacing the original PiNoIR Camera Module. This enhanced module features a Sony IMX219 8-megapixel sensor, a significant upgrade from the 5-megapixel OmniVision OV5647 sensor found in the original camera. What sets the Camera Module 2 Pi NoIR apart is its lack of an infrared filter, indicated by the "NoIR" in its name. As a result, daytime pictures taken with this module have a unique appearance, and it offers the capability to capture images in the dark using infrared lighting.
For those interested in monitoring plant health, the Camera Module 2 NoIR includes a small blue gel square. This gel can be utilized in conjunction with the camera to assess the well-being of green plants. The module's infrared capabilities also make it popular among wildlife enthusiasts. By incorporating a few infrared LEDs, users can observe the activities of nocturnal animals in their gardens without causing disturbance.
Compatibility-wise, the Camera Module 2 NoIR functions with all Raspberry Pi models equipped with a CSI connector, except for the Raspberry Pi 400 and the initial 2016 release version of the Raspberry Pi Zero. Access to the camera is facilitated through the libcamera framework, as well as the beta version of the libcamera-based Picamera2 Python library.
It's important to note that Raspberry Pi Zero models require a dedicated Raspberry Pi Zero camera cable, as the standard cable included with the camera module is not compatible with the Raspberry Pi Zero camera connector. These suitable cables can be easily obtained at a low cost from various Raspberry Pi Approved Resellers, often bundled with the Raspberry Pi Zero Case.
